Bill Baker began working for Montgomery Area Transit System in September of 1997.
Bill is the type of employee that almost never gets noticed-this is how efficient he performs his duties. Whenever he is asked to perform extra tasks, he always does so without complaint. Bill started as a paratransit operator and later transfered to MATS’ fixed routes.
He is always conscience of providing a safe trip for all of MATS’ customers. Since the time he has been at MATS there has not been a complaint of him not doing his job. Baker is # 1.
Keep up the good work Mr. Baker, for it is greatly appreciated by all.

R. J. RETIRES During the past four plus years we have had the distinct pleasure and honor to have Mr. RJ Grenz serve as our transit system’s maintenance director. RJ has been a strong and integral member of our team as we have undertaken the revitalization of the Montgomery Area Transit System. While his work contributions have been a significant factor in our success, his attitude, his character, and his humor have also been enormously important and should not be overlooked. RJ has proven to be not only a team player within our organization, but also a strong leader of the maintenance department team. We will miss RJ after his retirement but we wish him well in the future and we are proud to have had the opportunity to have worked with him. Good luck RJ! Tim Omick
R. J. Grenz retires After ten years with the transit system here in Montgomery, R. J. Grenz has decided to retire.
R.J. started with MATS in October of 1994, and through those ten years he has been a dedicated and loyal supporter of this transit system. He first came to work at MATS as Assistant Director of Maintenance under the former management company. Consequently under the leadership of new management, in 2000, R. J. was given a trial period of six months to establish himself in the position of Director of Maintenance. After proving himself quite capable during the trial period, R.J. became the Director of Maintenance, a position he has held for the past four plus years.
R. J. is originally from New York City, New York, and says he has no plans of leaving Alabama, which he now calls home. A proud father, R.J. is even more proud of being the grandfather of three beautiful grandchildren, whom he plans to enjoy more of during retirement.
R.J. loves the game of golf and enjoys playing golf at least once a week with his wife Jean, who shares his passion for the game.
R.J. says that working here at MATS has been an enjoyable experience and that he has truly enjoyed working with the people here and that under the present management he has seen a lot of growth and thinks that the future of MATS looks bright and promising. Pat Jackson
On Retiring How do we tell you goodbye? You have been a part of the maintenance shop for over 10 years. We will miss you saying “hello” to everyone in the shop each morning, and your great sense of humor. But most of all we will miss working for a wonderful boss. “I think if you can’t work for R.J. then you can’t work for anyone.” Thanks for everything and for making our shop a safe and an interesting environment in which to work. Also, your golf clubs and bags are on the way. Debra Peppers
Best Wishes From All Of Us! MATS

Mr. Allie (Gene) Turman was named Montgomery Area Transit’s employee of the Month for April 2005. Another richly deserving recipient for employee of the month for MATS.
Gene has been employed at MATS since October of 1974. For Gene, it is hard to list a reason behind his nomination and selection. His dedication to the company has far outweighed any reason. They are too numerous to just pick one. Whenever needed, Gene will be there to help.
His relationship with his regular customers is just as it should be, professional and courteous.
Gene is a loving husband and father. He is very devoted to the care of his mother. The only times that he has not worked when asked is because of a commitment he has made to his mother. Everyone should be as devoted.
Congratulation Gene. Keep up the excellent work.

Congratulations goes to Robert Thomas on being selected July 2005 Employee of the Month. Robert Thomas began his driving career as a young man, twenty eight years ago on December 9, 1976. Through the years there have been many changes in our transit system but not so for Robert , “The Bus Operator.” From the day he started to present Robert has exhibited professionalism at all times and a caring nature along with his sense of humor.
If you looked up the word “dedicated” (committed to a goal or a way of life) you would know that word describes Robert Thomas. Not only is he dedicated to his profession he is also dedicated to his family, his wife of eleven years, Martha, children Emily, Joseph and Nathan, his faith in God and his church , Crestview Baptist Church in Prattville where he serves as Co-Director of the Royal Ambassadors of Christ.
Named Employee of the Month for the second time, Robert represents Montgomery Area Transit System with the same, dignity, composure and positive attitude as he does himself in his private life. His character speaks volumes when it comes to job performance especially when it comes down to returning lost and sometimes valuable items to his passengers.
For the last two years, Robert has been instrumental in organizing “MATS Night Out” at the Biscuit ball games, and had gathered quite a crowd each time. Robert is a fun loving individual who says he rather be home than anywhere else if he’s not working or at church
