For over 30 years, Project Safe Place of Montgomery has helped troubled teens from turning to the streets or being incarcerated because of problems within their families.  Montgomery Area Runaway Youth Shelter, (M.A.R.Y.S.) was opened to provide a short term place for youths to stay while they and their families receive counseling and other services.  At M.A.R.Y.S., youth receive professional help in addressing issues they face such as despair, thoughts of suicide, anger, use of alcohol or other drugs, school problems, etc…  The shelter is open 24 hours a day accepting youth anytime. Youth ages from 12-17 years old may stay at the shelter. Help is free and confidential.

A Safe Place network of businesses and public locations was established where young people in crisis situations could go for immediate help. Any organization displaying the yellow and black logo is a Safe Place for young people to go for help. Once a Safe Place site calls the shelter, a child care worker will immediately respond to the location.

Today, there are over 150 Safe Place sites waiting to help any young person who needs it.  As a part of these locations, Safe Place has recently partnered with the Montgomery Area Transit System (MATS). Soon all of the buses will be equipped with the Safe Place logos making MATS available to help any youth in need.

Once a young person boards the bus, a supervisor will be dispatched on the radio.  The supervisor will meet the driver at a safe location where the child will then be transported to the shelter by the supervisor.
