Pictured above left is the fully restored 1950’s era bus on display at the Ford Museum. On the right is the actual bus that is being restored for the City of Montgomery.

Through a combined effort of the City of Montgomery and the Federal Transit Administration,  the Montgomery Area Transit System will soon have a new “old” bus joining our fleet.  This bus will be a 1950s era bus that has been fully restored to operation and will resemble the buses that were in  operation in Montgomery during the 1950s.  The bus will be fully functional and meet all Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.  The target completion date for this project is early Summer of 2004.

The 1950s era bus will provide several different services for the transit system.  A downtown circulator, fixed route service, and our developing school outreach program just to name a few ways that  MATS will utilize the bus.

The Montgomery Area Transit System has been revived over the past several years and is making a strong comeback. Our commitment to the community is an important aspect of the transit system and more and more riders are using our transit system as the system continues to see improvements.

We will be regularly posting the progress of this restoration project on our website and encourage you to log on to see the developing changes as we await the arrival of the 1950s era bus.  We embrace our heritage as well as look forward  to a bright future with Montgomery Area Transit System!  MATS, it’s the way to go!
